  • McAfee report has the domain with the most security threats (.com) at the top, and the domain with the fewest threats (.travel) at the bottom. Compared with other TLDs of similar size, .nl is the most secure by far.For the fourth year in a row, the Dutch top-level domain (TLD) has received a very positive security rating. The .nl domain stands 93rd on a risk list of 106 TLDs tested by McAfee.
    Constant improvement
Last year, when 104 TLDs were tested, .nl was 84th. To compile its list, security software producer McAfee looked at each TLD to see how often a visitor is liable to encounter malware, browser abuse, phishing, spam and risky connections. More than 27 million active domains were checked out for this year’s survey, just under 600,000 being .nl domains.

    Increasing risk
Globally, the survey showed another increase in the number of websites with malicious code designed to steal passwords and personal data, take advantage of security weaknesses in browsers or install software that turns the host computer into a zombie. Year-on-year figures aren’t directly comparable, because of changes in McAfee’s survey method. Nevertheless, it does appear that the threat level continues to rise, making it ever more difficult to surf the internet safely.

    Strong team
SIDN and the Dutch internet community have been working together to make the Dutch internet domain more secure – by introducing a Notice and Take Down Code, for example. According to CEO Roelof Meijer, these joint efforts are bearing fruit. ‘SIDN regards making the .nl domain more secure as one of its most important tasks,’ he says. ‘But it’s a task that we can’t perform alone; SIDN and its registrars have to work together on this. And that’s what we’ve been doing. Take the Phishing Site Alert Scheme. Introduced at the start of the year, the scheme draws registrars’ attention to suspect websites under their control. There have already been nearly four thousand alerts this year. Because the registrars – most of whom are hosting and internet service providers – have been responding quickly to the alerts, the scheme has already led to a lot of phishing sites being taken down.’

    DNSSEC
‘We are pleased to be so low down the risk list, but we can’t afford to relax,’ continues Meijer. ‘Internet criminals are extremely resourceful, always coming up with new ways of keeping their activities going and new ways of entrapping people. So SIDN and the rest of the internet community have to go on investing in security enhancements. This year, SIDN took a big step forward in that regard by implementing DNSSEC for the .nl zone. Now that the zone file has been signed, we expect a lot of individual .nl domains to be signed over the next year. The .nl registrars have a big role to play there. Together, we can create a safer environment for Dutch internet users.’
