In an experiment straight out of a science fiction movie, scientists have demonstrated brain-to-brain communication between two rats thousands of miles apart – a feat achieved with the aid of the internet.
Although a debate about domaining methodologies between two sewer rats is still years away from being possible – or is it
? – Brazilian and US scientist did recently manage to connect two rats’ brains together over the internet in a controlled experiment. The experiment allowed the animals to share sensory information and work on simple tasks to achieve rewards, with one rat stationed in the science lab at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and the other rat stationed in Natal, Brazil. The experiment is a big step towards what the scientists call the world’s first “organic computer”. Led by Miguel Nicolelis, famous for his work with devices that allow paralyzed people to control computers and robotic arms with their thoughts, the team of scientists believes their latest work may eventually lead to multiple brains being connected over the internet to share information.
“These experiments showed that we have established a sophisticated, direct communication linkage between brains,” Nicolelis said in a statement. “Basically, we are creating what I call an organic computer.”
The experiments included tasks which involved the two rats working together to switch levers based on sensory inputs in order to get a reward, and tasks that required them to differentiate between narrow and wide openings with the aid of their whiskers – with both sets of sensory signals transported and shared between the rats over the internet.
Before you start panicking over the impending invasion of the super-smart, telepathic rat race, heed these words from Anders Sandberg, who studies the ethics of neurotechnologies at the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University:
“I don’t think there’s any risk of supersmart rats from this,” said Sanbder. “There’s a big difference between sharing sensory information and being able to plan. I’m not worried about an imminent invasion of ‘rat multiborgs’.”
