IT infrastructure solutions provider SimpliVity Corporation announced on Monday that it has raised $25 million in Series B funding. Led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the funding round also included Accel Partners and Charles River Ventures. This latest round brings its total funding to date to $43 million.
This funding round announcement comes a month after SimpliVity emerged from stealth mode, launching its OmniCube product. OmniCube is an IT infrastructure platform that contains storage, computing and networking services for a virtual machine environment.
The OmniCube “data center in a box” platform is part of a growing trend of convergence in the data center. By combining computing, storage and networking, convergence platforms like OmniCube can help conserve power in the data center, and is managed from a single interface. SimpliVity says it will use its new funding to fuel its global go to market activities as it prepares for rapid growth in 2013.
“The customer demand that resulted from our recent launch has demonstrated that the market is starved for a solution like OmniCube,” Doron Kempel, CEO of SimpliVity said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have the backing of KPCB to help fund what we expect to be a transformation in IT infrastructure. In joining Accel and CRV, KPCB helps to form a dream team of investors who provide capital, expertise and access. Based on the unprecedented early demand for OmniCube, the first order of business is to prepare for imminent hyper-growth.”
OmniCube is a 2U rack-mounted “building block” that includes real-time deduplication and compression, deduplicated and compressed replication, advanced data protection, public cloud integration and cache accelerated performance.
Two or more OmniCube systems can be deployed together to form an OmniCube Global Federation, a pool of shared resources that enables data movement, scalability and availability.
In a post on Data Center Knowledge, Kent Christensen says that data center convergence can leader to faster application provisioning, greater elasticity of the infrastructure and greater resource utilization at a lower cost.
