IBM announced on Monday that it has acquired data migration software developer Butterfly Software for an undisclosed amount.

Based in Maidenhead, England, Butterfly offers storage planning software and storage migration tools which help companies save storage space, budget and power consumption.

IBM will wrap Butterfly into its software division, and plans to use the tools to help its clients drive greater value from its storage software and hardware solutions.

In addition to storage and backup migration, Butterfly also provides analysis to ensure the migration doesn’t disrupt customers live-production set-up. The Butterfly Analysis Engine for backup or storage can understand backup schedules, retention policies, data occupancy and daily volumes. This acquisition will help IBM meet its goal of a $16 billion business analtyics business by 2015.

Data migration can be a daunting task for customers, but this software could help customers optimize their infrastructures. Being mindful of energy usage has been top of mind with the recent New York Times article on data center efficiency.

According to a report by V3.co.uk, Butterfly services had previously been offered as value-added components to IBM’s Tivoli Storage manager lines.

Arrow ECS distributes Butterfly products to its service provider partners, so web hosts could have used this service.

This acquisition comes more than a year after IBM launched its new cloud based recovery and backup services.
