Information regarding the startup Diaspora has been in the news for a while now and really started during the times where Facebook was causing privacy issues and the ability to lock down your settings to stop these kind of problems. During that time, Diaspora has received cash to continue the work to create another Social Networking model to compete with Facebook. It does appear that the end result at the moment is not a competitor to Facebook, but rather an Open Source software package for others to use.

  With a small team of college students, they have been working to get the alpha version out so that people can start to work with it and see how it compares to Facebook or is an alternative to Facebook. To get to this point, they have provided developmental releases for review and comment. During those releases, issues were obviously found and corrected to make it a better product.

  On November, 23rd, the Alpha version was out and they are accepting requests to participate in testing the current version. The Diaspora Blog is a great place to see what is going on with the software development. They have a list of things which are still being worked on, one of which is the security.

  Unlike Facebook, which is a single site where people go, Diaspoda is software which you can download and run on your own server to host a Social Networking site. This is different than the expectations of many for it to be a replacement for Facebook. It is more like CMS software which you use to simplify the work to host a site.

  During the time of privacy issues with Facebook, there was a lot of interest in Diaspora, but now that there are far fewer reports of problems, it creates a challenge for this software to be widely accepted as a competitor and stay in the news. It does appear that by rolling out the open source software slowly, it does present the opportunity to get this right and not duplicate the problems which Facebook has seen.

  We are trying to become part of the Alpha group and see what the current interfaces look like and the functionality. They have the ability to make changes based on feedback and there is already some coming, such as from TechCrunch and Mashable which will give them the tools to make changes in future version. Whether this will be successful is dependent on others to use the software and promote their web site.
