The Domain Name System makes it possible to find websites when you're online. When you enter the address for Yahoo, Netflix or other websites, the DNS translates that into the string of numbers representing the location on the Internet you want to reach. Hosting companies provide DNS services, but Google offers its non-hosted Public DNS service as an alternative.
DNS
Hosting companies provide the servers that support the Internet's many websites. Some large companies host their website on their own servers, while other businesses rent out servers for websites. When you give your Internet browser a site's name, the browser contacts a program called a resolver. The resolver contacts one of the name servers that store Internet addresses, then reports back with the Internet address of the hosting server with the site you're looking for.Resolving
Most of the resolvers you use are hosted on a Web server. Google's Public DNS service is an independent resolver, not attached to any host. Public DNS caches DNS information and provides it when requested. Google asserts that this benefits hosting companies because the cache reduces the queries that actually go to name servers, relieving them of traffic. Google also claims its security reduces the chance of hackers tricking servers and steering users to sites that download viruses.Browsing
Your Internet browser normally works with a default, hosted DNS resolver. To use Google, you have to go into your network preferences folder and make the switch; Google has the instructions on its website. "PC World" says because Google retrieves information from the cache so fast, public DNS finds sites more quickly than hosted DNS. Another alternative to hosted DNS, the Open DNS system, offers the same advantages, but with more options for customized security settings and filters.Privacy
Google already stores a great deal of information about Web searches and users. "PC World" reports that while Google does record information on your IP address and your real-world location, it doesn't retain most of this information for long -- your location is stored permanently, however -- and doesn't share the information or attach it to your Google profile. Open DNS states that it doesn't sell any data from its users.Domain names have the lowest price:
