    Domain Registration

The first step in creating a website is registering a domain name. What this means is that you will purchase a URL that other computers will recognize as your domain. For example, the domain "
www.eranet.com" is a registered domain name. Once you have bought the domain name, as long as your registration period continues, you will have control over that domain name. Once you own the domain, you can choose where it's hosted, what emails are associated with it, what content it has and even sell the domain if you would like.

    Web Hosting

Hosting a website is a completely different service from registering a website domain name. The hosting provider runs servers, which are essentially large computers with large amounts of storage space and strong Internet connections. When you choose to put your website on a Web host, the first step is to "point" the domain to the server on which it will be hosted. That means you're telling your website registrar that anytime somebody navigates to your website, he will see the files stored on the server at your Web host. It's common for the domain to be registered by one company and the files to be hosted by another company. This allows the website owner to have the flexibility to move his website to a new Web host without interrupting the services on his website.

    Moving to a New Host

If you as a website owner have decided that you want to move the website onto a new server, the process is relatively simple. Each Web host has its own server address that can be found by normal Web users. To move to a new server, you simply write down the address of the new server, log in to your website registrar, navigate to the section that lists the"domain name servers"and fillin that box with the new Web host information. In total, the process typically takes two to three hours to complete listing the website on the new host. To be prepared, you can upload the file to the new Web host before making the transfer, ensuring that you experience no interruption in website service.

    Moving Email Addresses

The email addresses associated with a website are contained on the Web host. Thus, when you move a site to a new Web host, you will need to create new email addresses. However, if you have an email address on your old Web host, you can create the exact same email address on the new host. For example, if you have
info@eranet.com on your current Web host, you can create the email address info@eranet.com. When the website has been moved to a new host, any emails sent to that email address will still be accessible to you. If you're using email forwarding or webmail services on your host, you will need to set these up again, but they can be set up to provide exactly the same services one different Web hosts. Through this process, you can bring your email addresses with you when you move to a new host.

    Saving Old Emails
If you're storing your old emails on the Web servers, you won't bring old emails with you when you set up a new domain name. If you wish to bring old emails to your new Web server, you'll need to download them. Some email programs do this automatically. For example, if you have set up your email address to use Microsoft Outlook, that particular program downloads copies of all the emails to your computer's hard drive. Before moving to a new Web host, download the old emails if you wish to bring them along. You can do this manually by downloading the emails to your hard drive, or automatically by setting up an email program like Outlook that downloads the emails automatically. This step is important only if you wish to have access to old emails from your website server.
