Modular data center technology company IO announced on Wednesday that it has made several key executive moves – appointing two
new Senior VPs and a chief security officer – including the recruiting of tech industry veterans from Groupon and Apple.
IO says it hired Alan McIntosh, former chief information officer at Groupon as its senior vice president of global technology delivery, and
Apple marketing “veteran” Anne Wolf as its senior VP of global marketing and communications. For the security chief role, IO promoted from within, naming VP of government strategies Bob Butler to the role.
McIntosh, says IO in the press release announcing the hires, has deisgned and operated Internet infrastructure at Groupon,CBS Interactive, CNET Networks and Oracle. The company says he has technical experience to manage the operations at a company “moving as quickly as IO.”
Wolf has worked for two decades at Fortune 500 technology companies, including 10 years in marketing at Apple. Most recently, she was chief marketing officer for fraud detection solutions company 41st Parameter.
Filling executive roles at a hosting related organization can be difficult,in the sense that talent with hosting or data center industry
experience can be hard to come by.Fortunately, there’s obviously a lot of technology knowledge that translates directly from a role like
CTO, particularly at an enterprise with big technology requirements, or an entirely online business like Groupon. In the case of marketing, it
is likely that the expertise in marketing greatly outweighs the expertise in the services themselves.
The relative lack of available hosting industry expertise, however, is a big reason hosting industry businesses favor nurturing internal talent, as in the case of IO and Butler. As CSO, Butler will oversee the company’s internal information security and privacy, as well as cyber
security readiness for IO’s products. Along with the industry experience developed at IO, though, the company says Butler has 32 years
of security experience, including work in defense and national security positions.
“At IO you are the average of your team,” says George D. Slessman, CEO of IO, quoted in the press release. “As we approach the
tipping point for Data Center 2.0 globally,IO is succeeding by attracting, developing and nurturing world class talent like Alan,Anne and
Bob.”
