  • SkyPin will be integrated into Parallels Automation, Parallels Plesk Panel and Parallels Plesk Automation

With multi-factor authentication becoming widely used online, Parallels has followed suit by adding CertiVox SkyPin Multi-Factor Authentication Service across its entire cloud services enablement portfolio.

According to an announcement on Friday, SkyPin will be integrated into Parallels Automation, Parallels Plesk Panel and Parallels Plesk Automation. As part of the agreement, Parallels will use SkyPin as the single sign-on security and user authentication layer within its next generation of the Application Packaging Standard.

“Two-factor authentication is moving from being a ‘nice to have’ to a ‘must have’ technology for any service provider on the internet. Advances in cryptography mean it is no longer necessary to store any user identity credentials in the system, which is a major failing of the traditional username and password login,” Brian Spector, CEO of CertiVox, says in an email to the WHIR. “Where the cloud is going – ad hoc access to any application or service to any end-user or individual, as a one-off – we are looking at hundreds of thousands of apps and services, millions and millions of users, hundreds of interconnected service providers and multiple accounts per end-user and individual. Two-factor is the only credible type of authentication for that kind of perimeterless service provider environment.”

SkyPin uses a patent-pending technology and is built on “the strength of elliptic curve cryptography, and the familiarity of an ATM style PIN.” CertiVox says it is also more scalable, a critical consideration since it could provide authentication for millions of Parallels administrators and end-users.

“The way this works is that Parallels will OEM technology from CertiVox in each copy of the next generation of Parallels Plesk, Parallels Plesk Automation and Parallels Automation. This technology connects to the SkyPin service, enabling easy, PIN-authenticated onboarding and provisioning of users through the APS 2.0 system,” Spector tells the WHIR. “Until now, the login and authentication process has acted a little like the ‘Business Prevention Module’ within many service providers’ offerings – insecure, slow, not scalable. This agreement turns that situation on its head and transforms authentication into something that actually enables business to be done more securely, more flexibly and more profitably, thanks to two-factor authentication and a simple, four-digit PIN.”

This agreement comes a few weeks after Sprint launched its hosted Microsoft Office 365 offering with Parallels Automation.

Some web hosts, like DreamHost, support multi-factor authentication so customers can protect their accounts. It has made the security option available by integrating the Google Authenticator app with the DreamHost panel.
