Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud service suffered an outage affecting Western Europe Thursday.
Continuing a recent string of high-profile cloud outages in recent months, Microsoft reportedly suffered a “significant” outage to its recently-revamped Windows Azure cloud service, affecting Western Europe Thursday morning (about noon, London time).
According to reports, the outage seems to have been resolved within about three hours of the initial downtime.
Thursday’s downtime follows several recent high-profile instances of downtime, including an Amazon cloud outage in June. Service interruptions in products like these tend to catch a great deal of public interest due to the cascading effects on popular applications like Pinterest and other services, like Heroku.
High-profile cloud outages may impact the public perception of the reliability of cloud services, but they may also serve as an opportunity for hosting providers to differentiate and emphasize the value of their “enterprise cloud” type services. In an interview with the WHIR earlier this year, Latisys CEO Pete Stevenson described his company’s approach to differentiating its services from the big public clouds.
