Data center services provider Equinix announced on Wednesday that its company ALOG Data Centers of Brazil will build a new International Business Exchange data center in Rio de Janeiro.
Equinix acquired a majority stake in the Brazilian data center provider with Riverwood Capital in April 2011. The deal, first announced in February 2011, was completed for about $83 million.
Brazil, and South America in general, have piqued data center and cloud interest in recent months. In May, Level 3 Communications extended its Latin American infrastructure with plans to make a substantial expansion in Brazil.
The new Rio de Janeiro facility will open the first quarter of 2013, and the first phase will cost $20 million in expansion capital. Phase one will have space for 320 cabinets, with a total capacity of 1,170 cabinets once completed.
ALOG will also begin construction on phase two of its SP2 data center in Sao Paulo, which will be available in early 2013, according to the press release. The expansion will cost $14 million, and have space for an additional 350 cabinets.
This week Equinix announced that its revenues were $466.3 milion in Q2 2012, or up 18 percent over the same quarter last year.
