  • Soon the standard .com's, .nets and .orgs , which are now the basic domain suffixes of most web addresses, will give way to custom domain names.

According to a Washington Post article dated February 7th, the world of .com's, .net's and .orgs may soon come to a screeching halt, as the internet once again rushes into new and wide-open territory by expanding and personalizing domain suffixes.

The Internet's Domain Name System Could Soon Become Subject Specific and Competitive.

Those who now yawn at the standard domain name system, may have to catch their breath next week when hundreds of entrepreneurs, investors and consultants swarm to the first ever .nxt conference, which will take place in San Francisco over a three-day period.

The conference, which has been arranged by the Internet Corporation for for Assigned Names and Numbers and known as ICANN will be holding seminars on application guidlines at the conference. Speakers will explain how the new naming system will work. For instance, instead of a web address ending in .com --it could soon end in .love or .teen.ICANN is the company that coordinates the internet's naming system and web addresses so computers know where to find one another. Founded in 1998, the non-profit company, which is based in Marina del Ray, California, has an international board of directors.

According to the Post, the board has already approved the new domain expansion, but the board members have been discussing how to best deal with the changing system. They should be completing their talks by March or April, by which time, the company will begin accepting the applications for the new domain names.

Corporations such as IBM and Canon could well purchase a domain name such as .ibm or .canon. These companies would most likely be given priority in purchasing these domain suffixes. Countries and municipalities would also be given priority. For example .nyc would specify New York City.

Sports organizations may seek name domains such as hockey.sport; and musical groups could seek .music as their domain suffix. These more personalized domain names could go live as early as 2012.

It won't be cheap, however. Application fees will run $185,000. Annual fees will run about $25,000. The Post quotes Peter Thrush ICANN's board chair as saying that the high fees are needed to settle the domain name disputes that he anticipates will happen when companies begin vying for specific names such as .eco. Already, a non-profit chaired by Al Gore and another group chaired by former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev are competing for that specific domain.

Another issue the board is examining is how to deal with awarding controversial names. For example, should a domain such as .nazi be allowed?

Currently, the internet has 21 generic domain suffixes such as .edu .com .net. .info and .org. The ones used most are .com and .net, which account for almost half of the 202 million world-wide internet addresses. Country name domains account for many others--- Some of the most prevalent are .de for Germany, .eu for European Union, .ca for Canada and .cn for China.

This new world of expanding domains also becomes an opportunity to make money and plenty of it. Many domain operators feel they can make millions by selling web addresses to specific companies who would then turn around and re-sell the websites to consumers but at higher prices.

The internet revolution it seems, is an expanding universe that has no intention of dying out any time soon. Stay tuned for more change.
