Google and the Jordanian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology agreed to a $10 million deal on Tuesday that will give the Middle Eastern kingdom access to the search engine giant's online advertising platform.
For the last few years, King Abdullah II and other thought leaders in Jordan have been working to establish a thriving technology sector to boost the nation's gross domestic product. By consummating a deal with Google, Jordan will be able to offer domestic technology companies an outlet for strategic digital marketing.
As part of the agreement, Google will reinvest $2.5 million back into the nation's emerging information technology sector. The California-based Internet company said that it will allocate the funds to various digital media start ups and online advertising initiatives.
“Google’s decision to play a more active role in the development of the ICT industry in the Kingdom, especially as it relates to entrepreneurship, is a testament to the maturity level of our sector," said Marwan Juma (News - Alert), the Jordanian Minister of ICT.
Carlo D'Asaro Biondo, Google's vice president for Southern and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa, added that the agreement will enable Jordanian technology companies to establish more "local and global exposure in the digital world."
As of now, only ten organizations have been designated by the government as licensed advertisers. These entities include Royal Jordanian airlines, Petra Regional Authority and the Jordan Tourism Board.
The Jordanian Ministry and Google inked the deal at G-Jordan, the nation's largest ever technology event that brought together developers, webmasters, computer science experts and students. The event will wrap up on Tuesday.
For Jordan, coming to an agreement with Google is a crucial step in its plan to build out its IT sector, which accounted for 20 percent of the nation's GDP over the last two years, according to the AP.
