Twitter's co-founder Biz Stone
Twitter's co-founder Biz Stone gave a lengthy interview on CNN's "Reliable Sources" news show, telling viewers that his social networking website is vastly different from competitors in how it views the role of social media.
According to Stone, Twitter's goal is to develop into a compelling "real-time information network" to which readers and journalists alike turn for eyewitness news accounts any time of the day or night. As such, Twitter's role is quite different from Facebook, where the focus is on building online friendships, as the micro-blogging website aims instead to encourage users to choose reliable sources of information on subjects that they find the most interesting.
Broadcasting breaking news is a key element of Twitter's online strategy and Stone added in his CNN interview that this involved building what he called "extremely complementary relationships" with major media organisations.
Twitter has plenty to offer to television news networks that struggle to hold on to their viewers as a growing number turn to online sources for current events information. But social media can help these channels engage their readers, by finding out what they are most interested in watching on television, as well as asking for their feedback and contribution on news stories.
Stone noted that Twitter's on-going challenge is finding a way to remain relevant. This means that the social networking company must be able to deliver focused news to target audiences as rapidly as possible, and also make this content easily searchable.
Twitter also plans to extend its line of promoted products, opening the way for partnered news organisations to generate revenue using these tools.
