Columbia University, one of America's most prominent and respected schools, has taken an unprecedented move by warning its students not to discuss the Wikileaks situation on social media websites.

      The university's School of International and Public Affairs sent an e-mail to students suggesting that those seeking a career in government or the civil service could put their goals in jeopardy by even casually discussing the Wikileaks controversy with friends on social networking websites. In the email, sent to all students in the school, administrators singled out Facebook in particular as a place where this issue was not to be debated or discussed.

      The email was written by Columbia's Office of Career Services after an anonymous graduate from the school and a current high-ranking employee in the U.S. State  Department warned about the repercussions of discussing these leaks for those seeking government jobs.

      According to the email, discussing the leaks on any social media website makes hiring managers in government departments doubt whether the candidate has the ability and good judgement to handle highly confidential information.

      Nearly all jobs in the federal government require employees to keep to strict confidentiality rules, especially when dealing with internal documents.

      But some students at other New York and east coast universities are furious that administrators would try to regulate what they discuss with friends on social media websites, in their own time. Some believe that this represents an assault against basic First Amendment rights, while others simply see it as a completely unrealistic effort to discourage students from discussing one of the most important news headlines in recent memory.
