Intel Corp. sought European Union antitrust approval for its plan to buy McAfee Inc., its largest acquisition, adding security software to its chipmaking arsenal.
The European Commission, the 27-nation EU’s antitrust authority, set a Jan. 12 deadline to rule on the deal, according to its website today. It can then approve the transaction or extend the investigation by 90 working days.
Intel, the world’s biggest chipmaker, is counting on McAfee to help it add security measures to its semiconductors for computers, smartphones and other devices.
