The rumour that iOS 4.2 would arrive today was only partially right, for iOS 4.2 did come, but only as a third “gold master”, and with a new name: iOS 4.2.1.
It was all over the news just hours ago – would Apple truly release iOS 4.2 today, as 9to5mac claimed in a tweet?
Turns out they were right, but only half right. You see, an iOS 4.2 download did come, but not to the general public – only to developers with access to beta and pre-release editions of Apple’s iOS.
Unlike the second gold master, which was issued to fix an iPad Wi-Fi problem from the first gold master, the third gold master (codenamed 8C148) is said to be fixing a “severe” VoIP issue that sees the “ringing” sound continue on VoIP calls, even once the call has been answered.
If you want to have a conversation, then ongoing ringing in your ears is not the best way to do it, and thankfully, this was discovered before iOS 4.2 became public.
Indeed, now with three gold masters, you have to wonder whether Apple should have released a bronze master first, then a silver, and finally now a gold, although if Apple releases a fourth gold master, should we call it platinum?
The fact that Apple is also now calling it iOS 4.2.1 is interesting – while a .1 version was expected, it wasn’t expected to come before even iOS 4.2 was available! Perhaps it means an iOS 4.2.2 is still in store before year’s end to fix what seem to be niggly bugs that iOS developers aren’t finding sooner.
Although CNET somewhat fancifully claims that iOS 4.2.1 for the public could still arrive as “early as tomorrow”, especially given the litany of wrong release date guesses thus far, the previously announced date of November 24 would seem to be the earliest possible time for enough feedback to have been returned for Nov 24 to be a realistic release date.
But with so many days in November having already come and gone, let alone the unexpected showstopper bugs that have meant new gold masters, the last day of November could well the release day to remember, but if the release date slips to December, November will have been a month of missed opportunities we’ll never forget.
