AOL Email Implements 'Project Phoenix' Update : It seems that Aol has finally decided to regain the lost ground in the field of email from Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo as he company has launched 'Project Phoenix,' a web-based client built from scratch. Google’s Gmail, which was launched in 2004, is without doubt a very popular email service and Google regularly updates the web-based email service with new features. Microsoft also launched the Windows Live Hotmail "Wave 4" update last May to remain in the race and Yahoo is set to release a significant Yahoo Mail update in the near future.
"Email remains one of the most vital communication tools despite all of the new sites and apps available to consumers today," said Brad Garlinghouse, President of AOL's Consumer Applications Group. "There is still so much innovation to be done in the space and Project Phoenix is just the beginning. We see a huge opportunity to disrupt email in a big way. AOL is the company that brought everyone online, and now we're making it simpler and more enjoyable to be there."
It is interesting to note that email was brought to the masses by Aol in the 1990s but it failed to face the competition from Yahoo, Microsoft and Google and now has a meager 30.8 million email users. Microsoft has 361 million users, Yahoo has 273 million and Google boasts of 193 million users.
"We think there's an opportunity to redefine what email is for the consumer. I do think there's [been] very little innovation in the email space. Since Gmail, really, nobody has done anything that made you think, 'Oh, that's interesting,'" Garlinghouse told Fortune last week.
