I would like to compile the reasons for businesses to buy generic .com domain names for their businesses.

1) .com is the most recognised extension and people do type in keywords + .com. e.g. people looking to “China based domain registrar” might type in Chinabaseddomainregistrar, like Todayisp.com.

2) To redirect the targeted visitors to their business websites. Visitors, arriving to the domains are highly targeted and they are very valuable in marketing sense.

3) To get the targeted visitors for life as long as they don’t sell the domains and keep renewing them. In the long run, it would be much more economical than adwords advertising etc…

4) To build another website to help their business grow.

e.g. Microsoft got MSN.com, Bing.com.

Google got Youtube.com, Feedburner.com, Picasa.com, Blogger.com

5) To prevent rival businesses from owning those keyword domains. This is indirectly related to “survival of the strongest”.
