  • A hijacked Ethiopian Airlines passenger jet landed at Geneva airport on Monday after at least one hijacker seized control of Flight ET-702 flying from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to Rome.

A police spokesman in Geneva confirmed the aircraft had landed safely and there were no casualties. He said the situation was “under control” but declined to give further details.
One hijacker was arrested, according to news agency reports that did not immediately identify a source for the information.

More than one hijacker seized control of the aircraft, Ethiopia’s minister of information, Redwan Hussein, said, adding, “We have not identified who the hijackers were and what their intentions were.” There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy in the number of possible hijackers.

Police escorted passengers one by one from the aircraft to waiting vehicles with their hands over their heads, according to The Associated Press. The plane was a Boeing 767-300 but there was no immediate information on the number of people aboard, The A.P. said.
The aircraft was parked at the end of the runway, surrounded by security forces.

The plane had been scheduled to make a stop at Khartoum, Sudan, but did not do so after the flight was ordered to proceed to Geneva, Mr. Hussein said.

Ethiopian Airlines, in a statement published on its website, confirmed all passengers aboard the flight were safe and said it was making immediate arrangements for them to continue to their destinations.

Geneva airport authorities were to provide more details at a news conference later Monday morning.

The airport was closed briefly but operations were expected to resume quickly. cn domain   hk domain   pw domain
