Skype’s Twitter Account Hacked, Status Warns Users of Microsoft’s Spying

  • Eranet News on January 3rd,2014. On New Year  Day, Microsoft’s free voice and video service, Skype, fell victim to a attack by the Syrian Electronic Army, states a report from The Verge.


    The Syrian hacking group posted to Skype’s 3 million followers warning users of Microsoft’s email services.


    “Don’t use Microsoft emails (hotmail, outlook), They are monitoring your accounts and selling the data to the governments. More details soon #SEA.”

    Another tweet was posted later that day saying, “stop spying on people.”


    Both messages were removed after more than two hours and had been retweeted more than 8,000 times.


    Skype acknowledged the attack and assured users that no information was taken.


    “You may have noticed our social media properties were targeted today. No user info was compromised. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”


    This isn’t the first time the Syrian Electronic Army has targeted a major corporation. The group has been linked to hacking newspapers, computers, and companies such as the Financial Times, Twitter, The New York Times, and the BBC.
