  • Global IT industry body, CompTIA, says that cloud computing has moved to a new level of adoption with many organisations employing multiple cloud models in different combinations to optimise benefits and efficiencies.

CompTIA has just released its fourth annual ‘Trends in Cloud Computing’ study saying: “As cloud computing becomes a default part of the IT landscape, more companies are relying on cloud computing for business processes such as storage (59 percent), business continuity and disaster recovery (48 percent) and security (44 percent).”

Seth Robinson, CompTIA’s director, technology analysis, market research, said: “Once companies hit a stage where they are using cloud systems as a standard part of IT architecture they weigh the pros and cons of various providers and models and continually shift to achieve the optimal mix. A healthy percentage of companies are moving from one public cloud provider to another, moving from a public cloud provider to their own private cloud, or moving applications back on-premise.”

He predicted that companies would, in the future, have their architecture spread across multiple clouds along with on-premise systems, choosing the option that best suits their needs for a particular application. “This is no different than a traditional data centre with servers that are configured for different purposes, but the management challenges are much greater,” Robinson said. “As the industry moves toward a multi-cloud paradigm, there will be ample opportunity for IT channel firms to help manage the growing complexity.”

“True cloud pioneers are single-handedly changing the blueprint of IT as we know it. Cloud is now a palpable option within reach of any growing, mid-size business or large corporation. As such, we have witnessed an uptake of infrastructure and services ideal to hybrid and custom-fit cloud. These mixed requirements cater for collaboration projects, SharePoint for instance, and complex Disaster Recovery plans thus increasing flexibility and agility,” said Bennett Oprysa, CEO of BitCloud.

CompTIA’s findings are based on an online survey conducted in July 2013 of 501 technology or business professionals (end users) in the US and 400 IT channel companies.

The good news for IT departments is that, according to CompTIA, the incidence of rogue IT - where lines of business procure their own cloud solutions without necessarily involving the IT department - has dropped slightly. However, it says that companies must still find ways to ensure that both business needs and IT concerns are being addressed.

The survey found IT departments were responsible for procuring the major of cloud solutions, with some variation depending on application. The lowest was financial management with only 62 percent of respondents listing IT as having responsibility. Virtual desktop was the highest, with IT responsible in 82 percent of cases. Where the line of business procured the cloud solution, IT approved the purchase in 54 percent of cases, was consulted but did not have final approval in 36 percent of cases and was not involved in 10 percent or cases.
