In a keynote presentation held Wednesday at the Open Compute Summit in Santa Clara, cloud hosting provider Rackspace Hosting COO Mark Roenigk announced it will support and partner with Open Compute suppliers that provide open source data center solutions.
The initiative builds on Rackspace Hosting’s announcement earlier this week that it will provide OpenStack training at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Working with other Open Compute suppliers to provide open source data center solutions can only benefit the rest of the hosting and data center industry, and help to further advance open source infrastructure technologies.
Since Open Compute Project’s launch in April 2011, founding member Rackspace Hosting has supported the open source community by contributing a server design.
In October, Rackspace Hosting launched the industry’s first OpenStack powered cloud platform, Cloud Block Storage service.
The cloud hosting provider says it expects to announce plans later this year to purchase servers from Open Compute Project suppliers for one of its new data centers.
“Rackspace will support those companies and organizations that share our vision for an open cloud,” said Roenigk. “Rackspace is committed to supporting like-minded companies who are dedicated to open standards and breaking down the engineering barriers that lock users into proprietary technologies.”
Rackspace has worked with other technology providers that are equally as focused on establishing open standards around infrastructure technologies.
The community openly shares ideas, specifications and other intellectual property to bring forth greater innovation and minimize operational complexity in the cloud computing space.
