More than one million cloud-related positions that opened up over the past year went unfilled due to lack of cloud training and certification, a new report sponsored by Microsoft finds.
There will be as many as 7 million cloud computing jobs available by 2015, and the skills gap will continue be a challenge that IT companies face over the next three years.
Microsoft commissioned the study by research firm IDC, and interviewed more than 600 hiring managers around the world to understand the impact of cloud computing skills on the global workforce.
In order to address the skills gap and prepare their own workers for cloud-related jobs, web hosts like Rackspace have launched programs that provide specific cloud training. Rackspace’s program is directed at OpenStack training, and the cloud provider recently released its own study that recognizes OpenStack as one of the cloud skills in demand by employers.
Released in October, a VMware report finds that Indian organizations are recognizing the need for cloud training, and 62 percent of Indian organizations are increasing their cloud training budgets.
As employers struggle to find cloud-ready job candidates, they have shifted their focus on hiring employees that are a good fit first, and invest in training second.
“As opposed to leaving a position open for a year and waiting for a perfect set of skills, hire someone with potential and train them,” IDC VP Cushing Anderson said in a statement.
Employers are looking for potential employees that to know how to adopt and implement cloud computing, understand how cloud impacts IT, and know cloud risks and strengths.
