Q&A: Christian Dawson on the Founding of the Internet Infrastructure Coalition

Monday marked the launch of the Internet Infastrucure Coalition, a trade organization built to represent Internet infrastructure providers (a group that very prominently includes hosting providers) to lawmakers during the development of legislation that could impact the Internet.
The group started back in 2011 at HostingCon, as the Save Hosting Coalition, a movement focused somewhat specifically on the then-pending SOPA and PIPA legislation, which threatened to impose some strict requirements around copyright enforcement on service providers.
SOPA and PIPA were defeated last year, thanks in part to the efforts of the Save Hosting Coalition. For the group’s founders, it only solidified the need for a trade group to represent the hosting business in congress, helping individual legislators to better understand the Internet consequences of laws under consideration. Save Hosting was re-imagined as fully-fledged industry association.
The i2C returned this year, again at HostingCon, looking to recruit charger members, who would help to finance the group and spread the word. On Monday, the Internet Infrastructure Coalition launched, with a list of 42 charter members involved.
In an email interview with the WHIR, Christian Dawson, one of the founders of the Internet Infrastructure Coalition, talks about the groups purpose, some of its founding principles, and some of the challenges faced in starting a new industry organization.
