“This research project started when we began to notice that more and more political websites were being built on WordPress,” commented Automattic’s Peter Slutsky in a blog post.

Through the initiative, Slutsky focused on websites representing U.S. races for congress, governor, senate and state political parties. Slutsky noted a manual analysis was used for U.S. political candidates to determine what platform they were making use of. And the result? A increasingly large number of candidates and political operatives used WordPress to maintain their websites.

WordPress represented 35% of U.S. congressional races, 40% of U.S. senate races, 44% of gubernatorial races and 41% of state political parties. WordPress was also the chosen platform to operate major party websites hosting the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Statistics are displayed on an infographic here.
