  • Organic cloud storage provider Scality announced on Tuesday that it has launched Dewpoint, its Cloud Management Data Interface server.

According to Scality, CDMI is essential to worldwide cloud adoption since it avoids vendor lock-in associated with proprietary APIs. CDMI defines a set of APIs for managing various storage based resources.

Developed by the Storage Networking Industry Association, CDMI “defines the functional interface that applications will use to create, retrieve, update and delete data elements from the Cloud. As part of this interface the client will be able to discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and use this interface to manage containers and the data that is placed in them. In addition, metadata can be set on containers and their contained data elements through this interface.”

This news comes a few weeks after NetApp launched StorageGRID 9.0 software with support the SNIA CDMI standard.

“At Scality we sincerely believe that standards are essential    for the    adoption of cloud architectures    by businesses. After    a careful review we came to the conclusion that SNIA CDMI represents the best solution for cloud management and data access,” Jerome Lecat, Scality CEO said in a statement. “We produced an initial prototype of Dewpoint, Scality’s CDMI server, which we presented at SDC last year. After much optimization and dialogue with other vendors, we are now ready to bring Dewpoint to market, as the cornerstone of our Open Cloud Access strategy.”

Scality customers can leverage their cloud storage platform for any unstructured data application, according to Scality CTO Giorgio Regini.

Instead of modifying existing applications, Scality RING Organic Storage software makes the same data available through a variety of access methods including Scality’s own documented APIs, RS2 (an Amazon compatible API), CDMI and file system mount.

Scality will extend these access methods to CloudFiles and NFS in the coming months, Regini says.

“At the core of these access methods sits an abstraction layer used by our CDMI server, which tracks all metadata associated with a file, directory or bucket,” he says.

Scality CDMI server software is included with Scality RING and clients are provided with the StaaS pack, according to the press release.

In February, Scality announced that it achieved a 120 percent growth rate and signed agreements supporting more than 50 million users worldwide on cloud-based applications in 2011, including service providers like Webfusion, Libero and GNAX.

As an active member of the SNIA Cloud Storage Initiative, Scality will be at the SNIA Storage Developers Conference in Santa Clara this week.
