Today.net domain name is now up for sale via Sedo.According to whois records,the domain name was regitered in 1995,in the early days of the public Internet.

       "Today.net  may well be the last of the ultra-high-value generic domain names originally registered in the earliest days of the public Internet that has never been sold. That’s about to change, as the original registrant has finally agreed to sell the name by public auction.

        The great, memorable short generic domain names were all registered in the early days of the public Internet, in 1995 and 1996. Most of these powerhouse names, like Meals.com, Hello.com, and Live.net have long since changed hands for sky-high prices, and are owned now by major brands like Nestle™ (Meals.com), Microsoft™ (Live.net) and Google™ (Hello.com).

        Today.net could be the last holdout in this class of super premium domain names, still owned by the original registrant. In this case, it’s held by a Canadian communications consultant who bought the name for his own business in 1995, and never found the time or resources to develop its obvious potential as a major media property.

       “I’ve been offered hefty prices in the six-figure range for the name several times,” says Today.net owner Kevin Elliott. “But those offers have always come through private channels. Going that route, I’ve always been scared off by hot-shot investors who seemed to be trying to scam me.”

        When Microsoft shelled out more than a million dollars for the closely-related generic domain Today.com, Elliott began thinking more seriously about finally selling out. But he has opted for auction sale rather than a private deal.

      “I’m really not much good at high-powered negotiations,” says Elliott, “so I feel more comfortable putting the Today.net name up for auction and letting the open market decide the value. I know it’s a valuable asset, and it’s going to go for a high price regardless. I just don’t want to deal with the stress of the tricky legal manoeuvres that always seem to come up in a private deal.”
