Why Your Company Shouldn’t Be Based on a Hyphenated Domain

  • There are several obvious reasons why building your brand on a hyphenated domain name is usually not your best option.  To start with, the hyphen can be easily overlooked while your clients type in the URL in their address bar, or when they want to send you an email.  Another reason is that a different business may be based on the non-hyphenated form, thus, risking traffic leaks to the other site due to omitting the hyphen.  This causes brand confusion and may result in loss of business/opportunities.  Sometimes, people only have a few seconds to look at your online address, and they will usually forget that the hyphen was part of the URL.

While I was driving a few days ago, I came up behind a truck from the Piggy Back company.  The website, of course, is Piggy “dash” Back  Dot com.  For those who either had a quick glance while on the road, or those with impaired vision (non-drivers :) ), might not have got the correct address.  This is not like it’s printed on a business card or brochure, where one could actually can look at for a longer time.

Brand owners ought to take a closer look at their online presence.
