In an effort to promote their services, Lean Domain Search has conducted a survey of the most frequently used domain named prefixes and suffixes.

And what is Lean Domain Search? They describe themselves as “a free, simple, user-friendly way to find great available domain names. We do this by pairing your search phrase with other keywords and instantly showing you which are available to register.”

The list of 2,000 prefixes and suffixes were compiled using “a mix of paying attention to website names as they hit the HackerNews front page and performing a quick analysis of the domain name zone file” for a number of gTLDs.

“The top 1,000 queries resulted in 50,076,498 domain names containing 26,050,539 unique prefixes and suffixes (and yes, those 50M domain names represent about half of all registered .com domain names in existence).”

The survey found the “top prefix is my+, which was registered in 983 out of the 1000 domain names checked (myboston.com, mycoffee.com, myseo.com, etc). The top suffix, +online, was registered in 974 out of the 1000 domain names checked (bostononline.com, coffeeonline.com, seoonline.com, etc). The 5000th most frequently used result, +vancouver, was registered in 395 out of the 1000 domain names checked. The only results I omitted were single letter prefixes and suffixes because they’re not something you would generally add to generate quality domain names.”

Anyway, to simplify, it the top five prefixes were:

• my+ (1st on the list overall)
• the+ (3rd)
• web+ (6th)
• go+ (9th)
• super+ (21st).

And the top ten suffixes were:

• +online (2nd)
• +web (4th)
• +media (5th)
• +world (7th)
• +net (8th)
• +group (10th)
• +blog (11th)
• +shop (12th)
• +book (13th)
• +store (14th).
