A dispute involving Google and the control of the Gmail trademark and related domain name in Germany is over with Google obtaining control of both, according to an IDG report.
The dispute came about following the introduction of Gmail in 2004 and companies in the UK and Germany that had already trademarked the brand. This forced Google to name the service Googlemail in both countries.
"The UK case was settled in 2010," IDG reported "but the German case dragged on until the 'Gmail' trademark was transferred from the German company G-mail GmbH to Google last Friday, according to a transfer filing posted by the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA)."
"The legal conflicts around the use of the trademark Gmail and respective domains in Germany are terminated," Google spokesman Mark Jansen said in an email to IDG.
