Nominet,the company behind .uk domain,has been selected by the Welsh government to apply for .Wales and .Cymru .Cymru means "Wales" in welsh . Here is the announcement :

"The Welsh Government has announced it is happy for Nominet to bid for a new Top Level Domain (TLD) for Wales.

We will now begin preparing a formal application to ICANN to establish both .cymru and .wales in the interests of Welsh businesses and consumers. Survey results and stakeholder engagement indicate this pair of TLDs will be the most suitable combination to meet the needs of the whole Welsh community.

This community-backed application fits in well with our public purpose.  A key aspect of our approach will be to reinvest the financial surplus from this initiative back into projects that benefit Welsh society.  

This is an important and exciting opportunity for the branding of Wales on the internet. Our proposed model will position Wales at the forefront of the digital world, by creating trusted high quality namespace that provides clear signposts for all aspects of Welsh society."
