  • A new report detailing how Facebook and other social media sites affect modern relationships has surfaced, revealing that four out of five women and three out of five men believe they cause new couples to jump into bed faster.

Of the 1,200 people who took part in the survey, courtesy of Shape and Men's Fitness (US editions), 38% of women say they have slept with a date sooner than they normally would have due to so-called 'digital intimacy'.

The results have sparked interest amongst psychologists, with Dr. Dorree Lynn, psychologist and author of "Sex for Grownups," telling ABC News that social media is actually fostering a sense of 'faux intimacy' among couples.

"It's easier to hop into bed than have a relationship," explains Lynn. "It's all a function of the fast-paced world we live in, where communication skills, genuine communication skills, which means face-to-face communication, are quickly going by the wayside."

In addition, the survey also revealed that 81% of respondents use Facebook to keep in touch with an ex, with 75 per cent admitting to constantly checking a former partner's page.
