Google on Monday extended free Gmail calling until the end of 2011. The offer was originally supposed to run for the remainder of 2010, but will now be good for another year.
"In the spirit of holiday giving and to help people keep in touch in the new year, we're extending free calling for all of 2011," Google said in a blog post.
In August, Google made a form of Google Voice available via its Gmail service, offering users a new option to "chat" within the Gmail interface via free phone calls. It quickly logged 1 million calls in the first 24 hours. Earlier this month, Google offered free call credits through Gmail and Google Voice for military families.
To access, look for "Call Phone" at the top of your Gmail chat list and dial a number of enter a contact's name. The service is currently only available to U.S.-based Gmail users. More information is available at gmail.com/call.
