Foursquare appears ready to launch the new version of its iPhone app next week.

      The company tweeted the news on Thursday.

      "We just found an app approval in our stocking! New foursquare early next week. Thanks #SantaJobs," the company said.

      What the app will include is anyone's guess. At the recent OpenMobile Summit in San Francisco, founder Dennis Crowley said he was intrigued by the idea of automated checkins, after logging into MayorMaker, an automated checkin app, that logged him in at each of the mile markers of the New York Marathon.

      Crowley also said that the value of Foursquare is promoting experiences, not products. Future versions of the service could involve tracking which friends have checked into a given location recently, and other information that could be mined by both businesses and users alike.

      And another possibility? Peer-to-peer communication.

      "My phone should be talking to other phones in the room - what do so I need to do to make my next few days in San Francisco more interesting?" Crowley said.

      But Crowley also said recently that the check-in will become devalued.

      Crowley said he thinks that one of his service's core components, the check-in (where you arrive somewhere and then check yourself in on the Foursquare mobile app), will "ultimately become a commodity." Check-in is "not interesting," he said. "It's what happens after the check-in."

      Crowley said he believes the value to be in deals, tips and, of course, badges, which users can obtain through their check-in habits on Foursquare.
