Facebook was shut down following an incident where a member of staff accidentally leaked prototypes for an internal product.

      The website was taken offline for around 20-30 minutes, while staff worked to clean up the mess.

      The incident followed the introduction of a brand new profile page design, a new revamped feature in the photos section and a new page management feature.

      Facebook apologized for the downtime on its blog page saying that some internal prototypes hade been made public to several people externally which resulted in the site needing to be taken down. The blogger added that Facebook were sorry for any inconvenience which may have been caused.

      It is alleged that the problem arose when the code for the new products was exposed to the public prior to the launch of the products. This included ‘memories’ a feature which indexes what people have done on Facebook in chronological order.

      During the Facebook outage, news blog ReadWriteWeb wrote about the funny side of the incident, listing five things you could do while Facebook was down, they included using the phone and reading a book.

      A popular Tweet on Twitter suggested that while Facebook was down, half the world would become productive, whilst the other half will be using Twitter.
