British PM delivers a speech for developing 5G mobile network over the World

UK and Germany will run the race to develop ultra competitive mobile networks 5G together against numerous other efforts worldwide.

Speaking at the opening of the CeBIT 2014 show in Hanover, Germany, British Prime Minister David Cameron talked of developing a network that could download an 800 megabyte movie in one second, rather than the 40 seconds using a 4G network today.

Germany’s University of Dresden will collaborate with London’s Kings College and the University of Surrey.

“Three world leading universities working on 5G hand-in-hand is something to be excited about,” said Mr Cameron.

He conceded the competition to reach 5G first would be tough.

“This is a prize researchers all over the world are going for,” he said.

The European Commission last year committed 50 million euros ($77m) for research to conjure 5G technology by 2020.

In Korea, the government has invested US$1.5 billion in having a 5G network rollout by 2020 with a pilot network expected to be running by 2017.

The British PM said the UK and Germany would further collaborate on other areas besides 5G including a better European tech supermarket that would see the elimination of mobile roaming charges across the region and further develop the internet of things.

“We are on the brink of a new industrial revolution and I want us, the UK and Germany, to lead it,” he said.
